
Matt Smithson
Senior Director of Solutions and Development
Matt Smithson is Senior Director of Solutions and Development at the Heating and Air Conditioning Division of Mitsubishi Electric US Inc. (MEUS). Originally a founding member of the division’s Controls Engineering department, he now oversees the activities of the Product Engineering as well as the Testing and Compliance teams. His primary responsibilities include the creation, advancement and execution of the organization’s product development strategy, and leading the Solution Development Center toward profitability through these products. He optimizes the efficiency of the design process as well as the effectiveness of new product planning. His key contributions include early recognition and mitigation of product development risks, as well as communicating development challenges to senior leaders.
Smithson joined the Cooling & Heating Division in September 2012. His prior work experience includes designing embedded systems for the National Security Agency and a role at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he assisted computer intrusion investigations through malware reverse-engineering and network intrusion analysis.
Smithson earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as a master’s degree in computer science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He pursued a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Maryland, where his research on binary rewriting was awarded the Jeremy Lin Award for Innovation. Smithson is currently pursuing an Executive MBA from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. He has eleven peer-reviewed publications and holds four patents.
